Horsey Game NPCs & Quests — Old Bu, Bubba, Sweetie, the Alien

🔬 Sourcing. Every NPC interaction below is anchored to a Bilibili or YouTube playthrough timestamp. NPCs and quests are systems most guides skip — they're real, they pay well, and they have specific phenotype/lineage requirements.

Horsey Game's economy is partly a betting game and partly a quest fulfillment game. The quest side is heavily NPC-gated. Here's the verified roster.

Old Bu — $2,000 for a champion with rabbit ears

Location: A farm-style NPC area. Specific position not yet pinned to map coordinates.

Setup: 老番茄 @ 7:58:

"Old Bu's horses are useless, but he will give 2000 dollars if you can breed a champion horse that has rabbit ears like his."

Quest payout (老番茄 @ 11:21):

"Old Bu gives 2000 dollars if a horse with rabbit ears wins a championship."

Requirements (both must hold):

  • Phenotype: rabbit ears (splice rabbit DNA — see the rabbit preset in /tools/dna-database)
  • Achievement: horse has won a championship race (which itself requires 2 prior cup wins)

Workflow:

  1. F1 cross horse × rabbit in the DNA Database → get a rabbit-ear hybrid
  2. Race that hybrid through 2 regular cup wins
  3. Enter the Champion Race ($250 fee, $2,500 prize per /guides/horsey-game-betting-odds-mechanics)
  4. Bring the now-champion-with-rabbit-ears to Old Bu → $2,000 payout

Total expected return if the path completes: $2,500 (Champion prize) + $2,000 (Old Bu) − $250 entry = $4,250 net plus the unlimited lasso reward.

Bubba — $2,000 for descendant + big ears

Setup: Cheru @ 28:00:

"If you bring me a horse that descends from either Russian mafia, coronal mass ejection, or [a third lineage]. And it must have big ears."

Payout (Cheru @ 28:40):

"I've just made myself $2,000."

Requirements:

  • Lineage: descended from one of: Russian mafia, coronal mass ejection, or a third (partially audible — being collected)
  • Phenotype: big ears

Distinct from Old Bu's quest — same payout, different requirements:

| | Old Bu | Bubba | |---|---|---| | Phenotype | Rabbit ears | Big ears | | Achievement | Won championship | n/a | | Lineage | n/a | Specific named ancestors | | Reward | $2,000 | $2,000 |

You can in theory complete both on the same playthrough — they don't seem to compete for the same horse.

Sweetie — sells your trophies for $300

Setup: Cheru @ 15:35:

"Sweetie sold our trophies? Oh my gosh, for 300?"

Mechanic: Sweetie is the player's love interest (the campaign's horse-flu patient). She'll sell trophy items the player hasn't claimed for $300 each — but this happens automatically, not via player action.

Practical consequence: Don't leave trophies unattended near Sweetie. If you want full value (trophies are also accepted by the trophy-buying NPC mentioned in the hidden secrets guide for unspecified higher rewards), claim them as soon as a race ends.

The Alien — $3 certification license

Setup: 老番茄 @ 8:14:

"The certification license costs 3 dollars from the alien guy."

Mechanic: A non-human NPC sells some kind of certification license for $3. The exact unlock the license enables is not visible in the recording — likely either betting access, breeding access, or some progression gate.

$3 is trivial. Buy it on first encounter; if it gates progression you'll have skipped a friction point cheap.

"Lady" — $2,000 sale offer for a specific horse

Setup: 逍遥散人 @ 38:21:

"A character offers 2000 dollars for a horse named 'lady'."

Mechanic: Some unnamed NPC will pay $2,000 for a horse specifically named "Lady" (the lady in question may have specific phenotype requirements not visible in the clip). This may be a "find a lost horse" quest variant.

Caveat: Naming a horse "Lady" may be necessary but probably not sufficient — the NPC likely also wants specific traits. We need a follow-up clip to nail this down.

Strange Bedfellow — the lost horse quest

Spec (Cheru @ 46:00):

"Strange Bedfellow. Brown body, black everything else."

Mechanic: A lost horse named "Strange Bedfellow" with brown body + all-black mane/tail/legs/face appears somewhere in the world. Returning it to the original owner unlocks an achievement (one of the 26 — see /guides/horsey-game-26-achievements).

Softlock warning: Cheru reports this achievement softlocks if the horse despawns. When you spot Strange Bedfellow, return it immediately, before triggering whatever unknown event causes the despawn.

Bankrupt-state NPC — $50 poop job

Setup: 老番茄 @ 6:54:

"When bankrupt, a job picking up horse manure gives 50 dollars immediately."

Mechanic: If your bankroll hits zero, an NPC offers a $50 immediate cash poop job — a soft floor against full bankruptcy. This is the same poop-scooping payout that exists at all bankroll levels per Cheru, but the bankrupt-trigger version is documented separately by 老番茄 with the implication that it's an emergency unlock specifically when broke.

NPC interactions that are not yet quests

Documented but unclear payout / mechanic:

  • The pink horse farm (老番茄 @ 7:27) — players can spend money to buy racehorses directly. Functions as a horse market, not a quest giver.
  • The tavern — beers $10 each, "no reward by itself" (老番茄 @ 10:59). Beers ARE inputs to the Opening Speedrun drug-and-drag mechanic, but the tavern itself doesn't pay you.
  • Drunk farm owners (老番茄 @ 18:48) — "If the farm owner is drunk, you cannot trade." Implies a sober-vs-drunk state on NPCs that affects quest availability.
  • Convert-owner-to-horse (老番茄 @ 18:58) — "Dragging a horse onto a farm owner makes the horse become the new farm owner." This is the swap mechanic the speedrun exploits.

What this guide won't claim

We don't yet have video evidence for:

  • The full list of NPCs in the game
  • The exact map coordinates / regions for each NPC
  • The full payout table for the trophy-buying NPC
  • Whether quest payouts are one-time or repeatable per save
  • Whether Old Bu and Bubba's quests can both fire on the same horse

If you've identified additional NPCs or completed any of these, please submit via /contact.
